What is P&ID ?

 

What is the Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID)?  

                                                    (For Beginners) 

A piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) is a drawing in the process &instrumentation industry. It shows all piping, process flow including the physical sequence of branches, reducers, valves, equipment, instrumentation and control interlocks, etc.


The instrument symbols used in these drawings are generally based on International Society Automation (ISA) Standard S5.1

The below table shows standard letter assign as per ISA

What is a P&ID included?

  • Instrumentation and designations
  • Mechanical machinery named and listed numerically
  • Position and inclination of various types of equipment
  • Airflow direction
  • All valves and their identifications
  • Process piping, sizes and identification
  • Miscellaneous – vents, drains, special fittings, sampling lines, reducers, increasers and swagger
  • Process Flow directions
  • Interconnections references
  • Control inputs and outputs, interlocks
  • Interfaces for class changes
  • Seismic category
  • Quality level
  • Annunciation inputs
  • Computer control system input
  • Identification of components and subsystems delivered by others
  • Intended physical sequence of the equipment etc.
